Correctly surveying, installing, and maintaining firefighting equipment is critical, as it is the first line of defence in case of a fire. It can help to contain a small fire before it grows into a large one and, in most cases, a fire can be put out with a fire extinguisher before it has a chance to spread.
Surveying, installing, and maintaining fire extinguishers are among our core services here at NPG Fire Safety.
Suitably provided fire extinguishers form one of the key fire precautions in a building. They should be installed to provide adequate coverage specific to the risk posed and comply with relevant regulations and standards.
NPG Fire Safety is third-party accredited provider under the BAFE SP101 for the service and maintenance of portable fire extinguishers.
As a third-party accredited provider, we have demonstrated our competencies in this field to the highest industry standards, providing you with assurance that you are complying with your legal duties when appointing a competent person.
It is important to install and maintain fire extinguishers to ensure the safety of your occupants and your property.
Different types of fire extinguishers are designed to put out different types of fires, so it is important to have the right type of fire extinguisher for your workplace based on the potential fire hazards. We will conduct a thorough site survey in accordance with BS 5306 to ensure you have the correct fire extinguishers for your requirements and that they comply with current regulations.
The most common types of fire extinguishers are:
Your fire risk assessment should determine the suitability of all fire extinguishers. However, as a general rule, dry powder or multi-purpose powder fire extinguishers should not be provided within buildings, unless the risk is mitigated in the fire risk assessment, yet you will see them provided in commercial buildings, including holiday lets.
Foam extinguishers are also continuously provided where there isn’t a flammable liquid risk. The use of certain foam extinguishers containing ‘forever chemicals’ that are harmful to the environment will be restricted from 2025.
We are proactive in advising our clients to replace or phase out unsuitable extinguisher media in line with the Environment Agency guidelines.
When installing and maintaining fire extinguishers, it is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and relevant standards. Here are just a few general guidelines we follow at NPG to maintain compliance and ensure the effectiveness of the fire extinguishers installed:
Fire extinguishers provided in accordance with BS 5306-8 should be serviced annually by a competent person in accordance with BS 5306-3. Most extinguishers should have an extended service (emptied out and refilled) every 5 years, with CO2 extinguishers pressure tested every 10 years.
Portable fire fighting equipment should be inspected monthly in-house to confirm they are present, the pressure gauge is in the green, tamper devices are in place, and there is no obvious damage.
We offer management packages in which we can assist the Responsible Person in inspecting their fire fighting equipment, including multi-occupied commercial buildings, blocks of flats, HMOs, and holiday lets where staff may not be present.
