Fire doors are a crucial aspect of fire safety in buildings. They are designed to prevent the spread of fire and smoke by providing a barrier between different areas of a building and protecting the means of escape.
Regular fire door surveys are essential to ensure that all fire doors in a building are functioning correctly and meet the required standards. This is particularly important in high-risk environments such as hotels, hospitals, schools, and care homes.
The frequency of fire door surveys can vary depending on the type of building and the level of risk. However, in large buildings, our team recommends that fire door surveys be conducted at least once a year, preferably every 6 months, in accordance with BS 9999 and your fire risk assessment.
The Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 came into effect on the 23rd of January 2023. The regulation requires the Responsible Person in blocks of flats above 11m in height to carry out annual checks of flat entrance doors and quarterly checks of fire doors in common areas. These checks do not need to be carried out by a third party, but NPG Fire Safety can assist any Responsible Person looking to outsource them.
At NPG Fire Safety, we will conduct a thorough fire door survey to ensure that all fire doors in your building are functioning correctly and provide adequate protection in the event of a fire. Our surveyor will inspect every fire door for any signs of damage and wear and tear, including the door frames, hinges, locks, glazing, and seals. The surveyor will also verify if the fire doors have the correct labels and signage. The surveyor will conduct a detailed assessment of each door, considering its type and location in the building.
We will provide a detailed report on the condition of each fire door, highlighting any defects or issues that need to be addressed. The report will also include recommendations for repair or replacement of any faulty doors.
The report should then be considered alongside the fire risk assessment to identify which issues need to be addressed in accordance with the reasonably practicable approach defined in the legislation.
