Correctly designing, installing, and maintaining emergency lighting systems is critical to ensuring the escape routes and key areas of your premises are illuminated should the power supply to primary lighting fail. Emergency lighting systems assist in evacuation and initiating safe shut-down procedures, as well as highlighting key precautions and equipment.
Emergency lighting design, installation, and maintenance are among our core services here at NPG Fire Safety.
Where required, a well-designed emergency lighting system will form one of the key fire precautions in a building. The system should be designed to provide adequate coverage and comply with relevant regulations and standards.
NPG Fire Safety is third-party accredited under the BAFE SP203-4 scheme for design, installation, and maintenance. This means we can handle your emergency lighting system from the concept stage to the installation, commissioning, and ongoing maintenance.
As a third-party accredited provider, we have demonstrated our competencies in this field to the highest industry standards, providing you with assurance that you are complying with your legal duties when appointing a competent person.
It is important to select the right type of emergency lighting that is suitable for the size and use of your building. Each system has its unique features and benefits, and the choice of system will depend on the fire risk assessment and the building’s layout, occupancy, and specific needs.
We can install many different types of emergency lighting systems, including central battery and self-contained systems.
Depending on the use of your building and the fire risk assessment, a 1-hour or 3-hour duration system should be specified, and the fittings need to actuate within a determined timeframe, depending on the use of the area.
The system should be designed to ensure that there are sufficient emergency lighting luminaires to achieve the required lighting levels based on the output of the fittings being used.
The system may need to include maintained fittings, those permanently illuminated with battery backup, and those that are non-maintained and only actuate upon power failure.
All of our installations are commissioned in accordance with the relevant standards, and a certificate of conformance is issued under our SP203-4 scheme.
Once the emergency lighting system is installed, regular servicing and maintenance by a competent person are a requirement to ensure that it continues to function correctly. We can provide this for you as part of any ongoing service agreement. This servicing will be carried out by a qualified and experienced NPG Fire Safety technician who will inspect the system, test it, and replace any faulty components. There is a requirement to maintain life safety precautions, and in doing so, this can reduce the risk of system failure and increase the lifespan of the emergency lighting system.
It is important that an emergency lighting system is serviced for the full duration period that the system is designed to, which will be 1 or 3 hours.
We can undertake the maintenance of existing systems, which will initially involve a comprehensive takeover service.
Some of the key areas a takeover service should typically include are as follows:
Emergency lighting systems should be tested monthly in-house by carrying out an isolation test to confirm the backup power supply is functioning.
We offer management packages in which we can assist the Responsible Person in testing their emergency lighting systems, including multi-occupied commercial buildings, blocks of flats, HMOs, and holiday lets where staff may not be present.
To ensure our clients receive the most comprehensive service, we use an asset management software, Uptick. This software is ideal for business owners as it streamlines processes, providing a comprehensive overview of all your sites, assets, and outstanding remedial works for a complete audit/accountability trail on your own client portal.
