Fire safety regulations in England changed in October 2023; now, all businesses are required to have a documented fire risk assessment. The Responsible Person can compile their own Fire Risk Assessment by following the relevant guidance and providing that the final documents is ‘suitable and sufficient’. If they are not confident that the final document will be suitable and sufficient then they have a legal duty to appoint a ‘competent person’ to assist them, which is where we come in.
The changes in October 2023 have undoubtedly created a surge in demand for accredited assessors. It is estimated that around 20,000 people in the UK call themselves fire risk assessors, but there are still less than 1000 on a competency register. In the absence of proper regulation for fire risk assessors, we continue to see a rise in inadequate fire risk assessments which leave both the assessor and client exposed.
